Will they or won't they settle? Pasco teachers, administration head back to table

25

April

Pasco County's school teachers and district administration return to negotiations at 5 p.m. today to see if they can't come up with a contract for the year that is rapidly nearing its end.

The School Board met behind closed doors on Tuesday to give the staff direction on how far it will bend to reach a deal. United School Employees of Pasco leaders, meanwhile, sound upbeat about the chances to get something better than the offers that led the group to declare talks at an impasse months ago.

No one has shared details with the Gradebook. The key sticking point this far, though, has been the use of about $12 million in federal "Edujobs" funds, which the USEP has demanded go toward step increases while the district has insisted the money remain available for 2011-12.

Expectations are for a relatively quick meeting. Either the sides will be on the same page, or they won't. If they don't arrive at an accord, they've already got a date with a special magistrate next week.

Any predictions which way things will go?
