Education news and notes from Tampa Bay and Florida

Will you see 'Won't Back Down'?

After the narrowest of defeats earlier this year, Florida's "parent trigger" legislation is assured of a comeback performance next spring.

The debate already is shaping up around the newly released movie "Won't Back Down." It's generally being panned by critics as a heavy-handed political statement wrapped up in stereotypes, or worse. (See the Tampa Bay Times review here.)

But it's clearly fiction, unlike the documentary style of the pro-charter school "Waiting for Superman." So the question is this: Will the movie really form opinions in this conversation? Or is it more like listening to Rush Limbaugh or Amy Goodman, where you know what you're getting before you even tune in, and then you just sit back and enjoy?

More to the point, with such mediocre reviews (outside of politics), will you even bother to go see it?
