Did you note how much the Senate education budget proposal includes for Best and Brightest bonuses?
Much was made of the Florida Senate's proposal to exceed Gov. Rick Scott's proposal to boost state education funding to an all-time high.
One line item didn't get too much attention, though.
Education Appropriations chairman Sen. Don Gaetz zeroed out funding for the state's controversial Best and Brightest teacher bonus, based on their performance evaluations and college entrance exams. The recommendation came a week after Gaetz joined a narrow majority to keep the bonus program, a House priority, moving through the Senate committee process.
The House, which is expected to release its education budget proposal later this week, has looked to make permanent the program, which was a $44 million one-time expense in fiscal 2015-16. Scott has proposed $39 million for the program next year.
