Fifty schools will get half-time teacher leaders

As promised, Hillsborough officials notified 50 schools that they will be included in a pilot program that uses "teacher talent developers" in an overall effort to coach and support teachers.

This list, released yesterday, includes schools in all ages, geographic locations and income groups. Included are Mort Elementary School, which is also being developed as a "community school" through an elaborate relationship with the Children's Home Society of Florida; and all seven Elevate schools.

Superintendent Jeff Eakins stressed that although 50 schools have been chosen as pilots for half-teaching, half-mentoring employees, he wants to roll out training this summer that will boost job-imbedded professional development at all schools. To that end, the district will employ more teacher mentors and eliminate 160 peer evaluator positions that were created under the Gates-funded teaching reforms.
