Florida Department of Education clarifies new graduation requirements

As students prepare to head back to classes, some questions remained about Florida's new rules for high school graduation. Chief among those were to whom do the new graduation criteria apply? And, when do students have to declare which diploma option they will pursue.

The Department of Education has issued some guidance to districts to help them advise students.

It makes clear that the new requirements for a standard high school diploma apply to students entering ninth grade in the 2013-14 school year and afterward. They are not retroactive to students who began high school under past rules.

It also clarifies that students face no deadline to decide which of the two diploma designations they will seek. In fact, it states, a student can earn both the scholar and merit labels if able to complete all the associated work.

Parents and students should be informed of all the changes in writing. Read more about the rule changes arising from SB 1076 here.
