Florida Prepaid sets new rates ahead of registration window

Florida parents seeking to enroll their children in the state's prepaid tuition program will pay a bit more than the would have a year ago, but still far less than before lawmakers reduced the costs.

The new plan pricing schedules increase the prices incrementally. A four-year university plan cost as low as $173 a month last year, for example, compared to $182 a month this year. Parents also can select a one-year university plan, which allows them to purchase in increments as they can afford it.

"Families have told us they want more flexible options for saving, and the 1-Year Florida University Plan is a great example of how Florida Prepaid reflects the evolving needs of families," board executive director Kevin Thompson said in a news release. "We encourage families to research our Prepaid Plan options to determine what's best for them. Saving early really is the best way to save for college."

The breakdown looks like this:

4-Yr Florida University Plan: $182.63 or $28,894.37 lump sum
1-Yr Florida University Plan: $45.69 or $7,229.33 lump sum
2 + 2 Florida Plan: $144.35 or $22,837.96 lump sum
4 Yr College Plan: $114.69 or $18,144.71 lump sum
2 Yr College Plan: $53.13 or $8,406.48 lump sum

Open enrollment begins on Oct. 15 and runs through Feb. 29. Visit the Florida Prepaid website for more details.
