Florida Teacher of the Year to be announced tonight

Donald Blake is hoping to be stunned once again this evening.

That's when the Marchman Technical College electricity teacher will learn if he's Florida's 2017 Teacher of the Year.

Blake found himself at a loss for words when education commissioner Pam Stewart visited his classroom in May to let him know he was one of five finalists for the honor. He didn't even want to speculate as to whether he might win the statewide recognition.

If he does, he will become the first career-technical education teacher to do so, as well as the first from Pasco County.

The other finalists are: Precious Symonette, Miami Norland Senior High School creative writing teacher; Amy Miller, Kissimmee Elementary School math and science coach; Jessica Solano, Highlands Gove Elementary School third grade teacher; and Laurie Zentz, Switzerland Point Middle School music and band teacher.

The award ceremony begins at 6:30 p.m. at the Hard Rock Live in Orlando. Want to watch? You can stream the event on YouTube.
