Florida's teacher of the year is national finalist

For the fifth straight year, Florida's teacher of the year is a finalist for the national honor.

Dorina Sackman, an eighth grade teacher at Westridge Middle School in Orlando, on Wednesday was named one of four finalists for National Teacher of the Year, awarded by the Council of Chief State School Officers. The other candidates are from Pennsylvania, Maryland and Virginia.

"Florida has a long history of outstanding educators and I am pleased that the Sunshine State is again included for this prestigious honor," Florida education commissioner Pam Stewart said.

The last Florida teacher to win the top award was Tracey Bailey, a physics teacher from Satellite High School in Satellite Beach, in 1993.
