Grego changing top administrative team at Pinellas County Schools

After seven months on the job, superintendent Mike Grego is shaking up the top leadership at the Pinellas County School District.

He named a deputy superintendent last week - promoting William Corbett from area superintendent - and has submitted a bunch of administrative reappointments for the School Board to approve Tuesday. The most obvious change is in the curriculum department. Bill Lawrence, associate superintendent of teaching and learning, has been demoted. He has been named the director of student demographics, assignment and school capacity. (See the organizational chart here.)

Pamela Moore, the executive director of pre K-12 core curriculum, will be promoted to fill Lawrence's job. Moore's current job is going away. It was one of about 13 positions that Grego said he planned to eliminate in order to pay for other jobs he wanted, such as the deputy superintendent position.

The School Board will consider Tuesday whether to approve the appointments. But board members are expected to vote yes for administrative appointments, in most cases, unless the job candidate is unqualified.

Lawrence, who has worked in the district since 1977, said he was excited about this new position. He also said he works well with Moore and will continue to in the future. Lawrence has been in the associate superintendent job since 2011.

"I'm just ecstatic to be able to have a new challenge to contribute to the district," he said.

Melanie Marquez Parra, a district spokeswoman, said not all administrative appointments have been made yet - so administrators not listed in the agenda for Tuesday aren't necessarily out of a job. Salary changes still are being worked out for Lawrence and Moore, she said. To see the agenda item, click here and go to Tuesday's meeting.
