Grego gets up early for his first back-to-school in Pinellas
Think you had an early morning as the kids headed back to school in Pinellas? Your alarm clock probably had nothing on Superintendent Michael Grego's.
Today is Grego's first back-to-school as Pinellas's new superintendent, and the day started early: 5:15 a.m., when he greeted the district's bus drivers at the Walter Pownall Service Center compound in Largo.
Then, per his schedule, he swung over to Osceola Fundamental High School in time for the first bell. From there it was on to Madeira Beach Fundamental.
Grego also planned to visit Bauder Elementary, Seminole Middle, Seminole High, Oakhurst Elementary, Anona Elementary, Nina Harris Exceptional Student Education Center and Morgan Fitzgerald Middle by the end of the day.
Speaking with the Times editorial board last week, Grego described back-to-school as one of his favorite days of the year. Waking up early to greet the bus drivers was important, he said, because he wants to set a good tone for the year with all employees.
He plans to cap off students' first day back with a 4 p.m. debrief on the day's activities with district leadership.
