Hernando man becomes first male secretary for Florida PTA

In its 91 years, the Florida PTA leadership has largely been the domain of women. No more.

Joe Piecora of Weeki Wachee has become the group's first male secretary. A seven-year PTA member, he started out at Hernando's Explorer K-8, where he served as treasurer.

Piecora quickly rose up the ranks, serving as secretary of Hernando's county PTA council and later chairman of the Florida PTA MEN's group. He says he's "excited and honored" to hold his latest position.

"I believe that PTA has a purpose for all children. I currently work as a Data Entry Operator for Explorer K-8, the largest school in Hernando County. I also coach Cheerleading and Track at my school.  I have received the honorary lifetime membership award in 2012. I have no children of my own, but see 1,700 students every day at my school. I hope that you appreciate all that PTA has to offer," he wrote to members in the PTA's latest newsletter.
