Hernando school enrollment continues downward trend

As Hernando County students flooded into classrooms Monday morning for the first day of school, they may have noticed one important difference:

Overall, there are fewer of them.

After years of rapid growth, the Hernando County School District is once again projecting a drop in its K-12 enrollment for the 2013-14 school year.

The district expects to enroll 21,672 students – down more than 300 from the previous year’s projection and more than 525 from the 2011-2012 year.

The actual number of students who came to school on Monday, as is typical, is smaller than that number. In total, 20,444 students came to school – about 1,200 shy of what is projected, according to the first-day numbers of the district’s 10-day count.

The district’s enrollment generally increases throughout September.
