Hernando schools name new assistant superintendent
BROOKSVILLE - A veteran administrator and current high school principal in St. Lucie County has been named the Hernando County School District's assistant superintendent of academic services.
K. Alan Cox will take over the position, which has been vacant since December, when Ken Pritz was removed, superintendent Lori Romano announced. Cox will join Sonya Jackson, the assistant superintendent in charge of district operations, as the district's second in command.
Cox, 61, beat out three other finalists, including curriculum supervisor Marcia Austin, who was the lone district employee to make the final cut. A fifth finalist withdrew his name.
The search committee that recommended Cox was impressed with his passion and focus on research-based practices, according to a news release.
He brings years of administrative experience to Hernando County.
Most recently, he served for a year as principal of St. Lucie West Centennial High School. He also has served as superintendent in Kentland, Ind., a district of just over 1,000 students, and assistant superintendent at Lincoln Park Academy in Fort Pierce.
The district also has announced that Latressa Jones will serve as the principal of Endeavor Academy, the alternative school for students with behavior issues. Jones most recently served as one of the assistant principals at Springstead High. Before that, she was an assistant principal at Central High and a counselor for academic enrichment programs for at-risk youth, according to a news release.
