Hernando teachers union backs three candidates

BROOKSVILLE - After opting not to endorse candidates in the 2012 election cycle, the Hernando Classroom Teachers Association has thrown its support behind candidates in each of this year's three School Board races.

In the District 1 race, the union has endorsed Mark Johnson over incumbent John Sweeney and challenger Don Whiting. For the open District 3 seat, the union decided to back Jay Rowden over Beth Narverud. In District 5, the teachers are backing incumbent and former teacher Cynthia Moore over challengers Anna Liisa Covell, Robert Neuhausen and Susan Duval, who recently retired as principal of Springstead High School.

Former union president Joe Vitalo said the association decided against endorsing candidates in 2012 and instead decided to encourage people to get out and vote. He said the union doesn't have a strong track record when it comes to picking winning candidates.
