Hillsborough suspensions, by the numbers

The Hillsborough school district is tracking out-of-school suspensions of more than five days -- and so is Gradebook.

Here's a school-by-school list of the suspensions from the beginning of the school year through Oct. 20.

Leading the list for high schools were East Bay and Hillsborough High School, both with 19.

Three middle schools were tied for the most incidents at 17: Benito, Stewart and McLane.

Sulphur Springs K-8 reported six out-of-school suspensions of more than five days.

Booker T. Washington Elementary had two.

The district is encouraging schools to provide more supports to children who misbehave, rather than putting them out of school and causing them to fall behind academically. Any suspension of more than five days requires permission from the school's area superintendent.

Gradebook will update this list periodically. We're also interested in learning how this new policy is working in the schools.  Call Marlene Sokol, 813-226-3356 if you can help us.
