In Hillsborough schools, it's next year before you know it
Careful when planning that summer vacation.
The next school year in Hillsborough County begins on Aug. 10.
And don't think it gets any better the following year. According to calendars up for approval Tuesday by the School Board, the 2017-2018 year begins on .... Aug. 10.
Educators have long wanted to start the year early enough to end first semester before the winter holidays. That, and allow a full week off for Thanksgiving to save the fuel costs involved in opening and closing the buildings. They were held back by a state law that lengthened the summer vacation, in part because the tourist industry needed cheap labor. Then, when that law went away in 2015, Hillsborough officials wanted to allow a year of adjustment.
That year came and went.
The proposed calendars include days off for Columbus Day (which is called a "non-student day"), Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and -- yes, this is still happening -- Student Day at the Fair in February. (A separate day is observed in East Hillsborough for the Strawberry Festival.)
But take comfort that June is wide open. The school year ends on May 26 in 2017, and May 25 in 2018.
