Linda Lerner, the longest serving member of the Pinellas County School Board, is being honored today by the Florida Education Association with the human and civil rights leadership award.

The award is given every year to someone who has "demonstrated support and promotion of diversity and social justice."

The FEA's human and civil rights committee said that Lerner has pushed to create tougher anti-discrimination and anti-bullying policies. Committee members called her a "stalwart champion of those without voices in the community, a model of civic leadership, an indefatigable fighter for equality and a paragon of honesty, fairness and goodwill."

Lerner is being given the award at the annual FEA human and civil rights award luncheon in Orlando. The award is one of five given every year by the FEA at the luncheon.

Lerner has served on the School Board for more than 20 years. The FEA is the state's teachers union.
