Maximo and Melrose elementaries looking for teachers

The Pinellas County School District has posted job advertisements for teachers at Melrose Elementary and Maximo Elementary, two of five schools with turnaround plans that require teachers to reapply for their jobs.

This is the second such posting for Maximo and the first for Melrose. Fairmount Park Elementary, another school on the state's list, posted a job ad for teachers last week. Teachers at the schools this year were required to reapply for their jobs as part of the state-mandated turnaround process. Teachers with ratings of effective or highly effective should be able to keep their jobs, although it's not a guarantee.

It's not clear how many teachers are needed at the schools. Many teachers requested transfers out of the schools - at Melrose, 71 percent of the staff asked to be moved - and the district hasn't provided many details. Superintendent Mike Grego said last week that he planned to meet soon with the five principals for an update. He expected hiring to be complete in June.

Teachers who go to the turnaround schools will receive a $3,000 bonus.
