Neighbors rally to shore up FishHawk school during storm
No, it wasn't a roof issue that had Bevis Elementary calling out for towels in the storm.
Water was seeping into a section of the building that had been tapped as an Irma shelter - despite work that was done over the summer to prevent such intrusions.
Messages went out on Facebook and Twitter and before long, neighbors of the FishHawk Ranch school were at the site with towels and sandbags.
"As always the generosity of our amazing community was overwhelming!" principal Melanie Cochrane posted on a community Facebook page.
To a teacher who asked about a leak in her classroom, Cochrane wrote, "they did a huge project this summer to seal the whole bottom floor of our buildings - apparently we have one room that still needs work"
The district's five-year plan shows Bevis is due for a $480,000 paint job, something that also helps prevent intrusion.
