New principals in Hillsborough



The Hillsborough County School Board approved these principals appointments Tuesday:

* Melissa Babanats, 39, Town 'N Country Elementary School. Babanats joined the district in 2000 as a guidance counselor at Tampa Bay Boulevard Elementary School. She was a counselor at Davis Elementary and, most recently, that school's assistant principal.

* Derrick Gaines, 52, Bowers-Whitley Career Center. Gaines, an employee since 1989, taught at King, Sickles and Middleton high schools. He was an assistant principal at Sickles, Tampa Bay Technical High School and Middleton. He is now leaving the principal's job at Van Buren Middle School.

* Greg Cannella, 40, Miles Elementary School. Cannella joined the district in 1997 as a teacher at McDonald Elementary. He was assistant principal at Doby Elementary, principal at McDonald and supervisor of technology training in the district's professional development department.

* Rebecca Salgado, Ruskin Elementary School. Salgado joined the district in 2005. She began as a teacher at Palm River Elementary School, then taught at Wimauma Elementary. She was an assistant principal at Desoto Elementary and is now being promoted from her job as Ruskin's assistant principal.

The board also named Cinzia Delange, formerly coordinator of grants and research, as supervisor of charter schools.

Jennifer Canady will be moved from her job as a reading coach at Jefferson High School to Spoto High School, where she will be an assistant principal. Cheryl Rodriguez, a teacher at Webb Middle School, will become an assistant principal at Bloomingdale High. And peer evaluator Brent Williams was named assistant principal at Buchanan Middle School.
