No drama in Pasco School Board chairman choice
Pasco County School Board members shook their heads Tuesday evening as they followed online feeds detailing the Hillsborough County School Board's politically charged leadership selection.
"Nothing like that will happen here," said Joanne Hurley, the vice chair who was in line to lead the Pasco board.
And it didn't.
Hurley's colleagues unanimously voted her into the post without opposition, taking less than a minute to do so. They then chose Allen Altman as vice chairman, within the same minute.
The biggest emotion that came during the non-event was laughter. It came when Hurley, who's maybe 5 feet tall, claimed the chairman's chair from Steve Luikart, who's 6-foot-plus.
Hurley disappeared from view as she plunged into Luikart's low-slung seat, quickly adjusting the levers until her head rose above the board dais. She later joked that "I'll finally be able to see the flag during the Pledge," after a year spent standing to the left of Luikart, who completely obscured her view.
Hurley, who has served two terms in office, will retire in 2016. Altman was reelected to a third term in 2014.
