Pasco School Board prepares to name newest elementary school
Elementary School W has its site, where it's rapidly rising, its principal and its attendance zone. What it needs is a name, and the Pasco School Board has three dozen proposals to choose among when it meets March 15.
The ideas include historic, biographic and geographic. The most recommended names are Porter Elementary, after the family that owned the land where the school and its surrounding community are growing, and Meadow Pointe Elementary, after the subdivision it will serve.
But many others could get some attention as well. They include:
- Gatorville Elementary, representing the nickname of the Boyette community from the 1840s
- Godwin Elementary, after the area's first postmaster
- Meadow Ridge Elementary, after the housing across the street
Several well-known school and civic leaders had their names put into the mix. Among them are former superintendent Heather Fiorentino; former principals Wendell Krinn, David Estabrook and Max Ramos; longtime former educator Greta Adams; and veteran former tax collector Mike Olson. Some people recommended conceptual names, such as Wonderful, World Change, Unity and Bright Future. President Barack Obama's name was added, as well as that of Audobon Society cofounder Harriet Hemenway.
The School Board has the final say, and it will follow a handful of rules it has set for the naming of schools. What do you think is the best idea?
