Pasco School Board to set 2017-18 student calendar
Summer break will return to its usual length for Pasco County students if the School Board adopts a proposed 2017-18 academic calendar on Tuesday.
Classes would resume Aug. 14, four days after the earliest allowed date and 11 weeks after school lets out for vacation. Children had a truncated break this past summer, as the district pushed its start date ahead by two weeks rather than continue to wait until 14 days before Labor Day, as previous law required.
The calendar, recommended by a committee of teachers, staff, administrators and union representatives, continues to give students a week off for Thanksgiving. It makes clear, though, that the first two days of that week are reserved for any needed hurricane makeup dates.
The committee avoided having to decide whether to hold classes on Veterans Day again, as has become recent practice, because the holiday falls on the weekend in 2017.
Winter break would run Dec. 25, 2017, through Jan. 8, 2018. Spring break would occur March 16-25, 2018, and students' (except seniors) last day would be May 25, 2018. High school graduations are proposed for May 17-20, 2018.
The School Board is scheduled to vote Tuesday on the calendar.
