Pasco school district blocks access to social media site after parent complaint
The social media site Wattpad.com is designed as a site for sharing stories. Its online motto reads, "the world's largest community for readers and writers."
One parent's concerns about the site has prompted the Pasco County school district to block access from its networks. The mom contacted her daughter's school and the superintendent's office after learning the girl was using the site from school to exchange "descriptive sexual actions" with people she met online.
She said her daughter was accessing the site during her classes that use computers. The family blocked access from home, she said, but needed help from the school side.
Superintendent Kurt Browning, who received the email on Saturday, instructed the district's information technology department to block Wattpad on Monday morning. It was done just after 10 a.m.
Still, IT director John Simon cautioned, students still might be able to use the site while on campus.
"Any individual accessing this site through 3G/4G on a personal device will still have access," Simon wrote. "We cannot block 3G/4G services.
