Pinellas approves application for Montessori charter
The Pinellas County School Board voted unanimously in favor of approving an application for a proposed Montessori charter school.
Academy By the Sea, which wants to serve students in fourth to eighth grade, would be the first Montessori charter school in Pinellas County. It would be a small school, serving fewer than 200 students.
To open next year, the school still needs to negotiate a charter with the school district and get it approved by the School Board. The application is just one step.
Many supporters came out in support of the proposed school, saying they wanted a public school option in the beach communities. They hope to find a location in St. Pete Beach.
The charter's organizers view the proposed school as a next step for students attending two private schools, Alegria Montessori and Montessori By the Sea, and Gulfport Elementary's Montessori magnet program, which ends at fifth grade.
