Pinellas considering charter school administration shake-up

Pinellas is eying a few more changes to how it runs its school system, including the growing charter school sector.

At a school board workshop scheduled for Tuesday, board members will look at the details of a potential new position: "charter schools and home education specialist."

The board discussed the job at last month's workshop, but its taken on shape since: "Essential responsibilities" include working with tech to track the progress of charter schools, getting out information about charters, and making sure they stick to state and federal laws.

The specialist will report to - well, another position that's changing a bit. The district's looking at changing its partnership school coordinator position to "director of charter schools and home education."

The partnership school coordinator already had oversight of charter school affairs, but the job description now would explicitly include:

  • Monitors compliance of charter schools and home education programs with district and state requirements
  • Administers contracts/agreements for charter schools and home education programs
As far as qualifications, the director won't need certification in elementary or secondary education anymore. However, he or she will newly need management skills and knowledge of charter law.

Other language, largely related to partnerships with businesses and the Pinellas community, got snipped while the focus on charters increased.
