Pinellas considering three land deals
The Pinellas County School Board will hear Wednesday about several potential land deals, including the purchase of the historic Women's Club next to Melrose Elementary.
District officials are recommending that the School Board sell a small piece of property across the street from Palm Harbor University High. The site is between Omaha Street and Orange Boulevard Way. Nationwide Title Co. has been leasing the site for parking for almost two years and now would like to buy it.
District officials also are recommending that the School Board purchase some land from Friendship Baptist Church to increase parking options at 74th Street Elementary. The elementary school doesn't have enough parking to accommodate the size of its staff, with staffers parking in areas "that were never intended or designed to safely park cars," officials wrote in their presentation.
There's no official recommendation about whether to purchase the Women's Club, which is next to Melrose Elementary. District officials wanted to buy it years ago, but were turned down. Now the Women's Club has approached the school district about a sale. The district already redesigned the parking lot around the Women's Club, so it's not clear whether the property is needed.
In the presentation materials for Wednesday's work session, district officials didn't include the size of the properties in question or how much each of the deals would cost. The workshop starts at 10 a.m.
