Pinellas School Board to discuss terminating four charter schools
An agenda for a regularly scheduled Pinellas County School Board workshop on Tuesday has been amended to discuss the termination of four charter schools.
School board members will discuss issuing a 90-day notice to terminate charters for four schools: Windsor Preparatory Academy and East Windsor Middle Academy in St. Petersburg, Newpoint Pinellas Academy in Clearwater and Florida Virtual Academy in Pinellas. The items were added to the agenda late Monday afternoon.
Three of those schools, Windsor Prep, East Windsor and Newpoint Pinellas Academy, are under a management agreement with Newpoint Education Partners. That company and three of its vendors were indicted Wednesday by a grand jury in Escambia County on charges of grand theft, money laundering and aggravated white crime.
Two associate superintendents over student and community services and finance and business services will join an assistant school board attorney and the district's charter school director at the workshop to update the board on Newpoint Education Partners. District spokeswoman Lisa Wolf said district attorneys are taking a "deep dive" into the indictments and "will take the appropriate next steps."
The terminations will go up for a vote at a board meeting on May 17.
