Pinellas schools police chief is out
Pinellas County Schools is searching for a new chief of police.
Thomas Gavin, who has worked for the school system since 2001, retired last month, according to school board documents.
Schools spokeswoman Melanie Marquez Parra says Sgt. Rick Stelljes is serving as the acting chief while Pinellas looks for a permanent replacement.
"The process to replace him will be a position opening will be posted and then interviews will be conducted," she said.
School security's been a big talking point in Pinellas and across the nation in the wake of the Newton, Conn. shooting. In February, Pinellas moved to heighten security at nine elementary schools and one middle school.
