Pinellas superintendent running for student scholarships

Pinellas school superintendent Mike Grego has organized a team to run in the Ties and Tennis Shoes 5K, which raises money for student scholarships. The event is organized by the Pinellas Education Foundation.

The race, which is Dec. 7 at Tropicana Field, is a chip-timed race and benefits Take Stock in Children scholarships. Take Stock in Children helps pay for college and technical education. Grego participated in the race last year.

He sent this message last month to employees in the Pinellas County School District's headquarters:

"Colleagues, Help raise funds that go directly into the hands of Pinellas County Schools students by joining the Superintendent’s Running Team, in the Strides for Education Ties and Tennis Shoes 5k. The race will be held at 7:30 a.m., Dec. 7 at Tropicana Field. Superintendent’s Running Team is open to all ages, runners, walkers and those who just want to donate. All are welcomed. The goal is to have as many participants as possible from the Administration Building to join our pursuit to increase scholarship funding for PCS students. So, why join the Superintendent’s Running Team? The theme “we can do this…together” was used at this school year’s first principals gathering. It’s going to take all of us working together to improve student achievement across the district. By joining our team for the Ties and Tennis Shoes 5k, we will be working with the Pinellas Education Foundation in its effort to raise scholarship money that goes to a number of the district’s deserving students. To join the team. Click Superintendent’s Running Team and then the "join the team" button. The fee is $25 before Nov. 1 and $30 before Dec. 1. The entry fee includes a T-shirt and a family-friendly party in the Trop’s outfield after the race. There are also fee options for those who want to join the team by participating in the one-mile walk or for those who just want to donate. Once you have joined the team, email Welcome to the team and we can do this together."
