Ridgewood High School gym named after first principal Wendell Krinn
The gym at Pasco County's Ridgewood High School is undergoing renovations. Only construction workers are allowed inside.
When it reopens in April, it will come with a celebration that includes a new name. The Pasco School Board on Tuesday dedicated the facility to Wendell Krinn, Ridgewood's first principal, who died in January.
"I know how thrilled he would be." Martha Krinn, his wife, told the School Board. "I would not want anything named in his honor that was not Ridgewood, because that was his love."
Board member Allen Altman, who has known the family for years, said naming the gym after the longtime educator made perfect sense.
"If there ever was a sports fanatic, it was him," Altman said. "It's a great honor and well done."
Board members Steve Luikart and Cynthia Armstrong, both of whom worked at Ridgewood with Krinn, praised him as a collaborative leader with a competitive spirit.
"I always say I worked with him, because you never worked for him," said Luikart, who called Krinn his mentor.
Current Ridgewood principal Angie Murphy said the school is embracing the honor. She's already ordered graduation tickets to read that the event will take place in the Wendell Krinn gymnasium.
"This is a true community honor that was brought forward," Murphy said.
