Senator seeks to get uniforms funding to Florida charter schools

Florida charter school leaders protested earlier this year that their schools were unfairly blocked from collecting mandatory student uniform incentive funds that lawmakers put into the budget.

The law said charter schools were eligible for a chunk of the $10 million, but Department of Education guidelines connected charters to district participation.

Sen. Don Gaetz looks to change that setup in a bill that would renew the one-time expense. Within SB 672, filed Thursday, Gaetz proposes to put the incentive program into law with language making clear that charter schools could independently qualify for the award for adopting mandatory uniforms for kindergarten through eighth grade.

His bill would provide "not less than $10 per student" as an annual award for charter schools and school districts that meet the criteria.

It's part of a larger measure that would expand personal learning scholarship accounts and postsecondary options for students with disabilities.
