Summer Bridge registration to continue

3

April

Parents still can sign up their children for Summer Bridge , the Pinellas County School District ’s new six-week summer program for struggling students.

The initial registration period closed Tuesday, with 2,197 students enrolling. But district officials plan to have another registration period between April 15 and May 3. High school registration will start after students get the results for end-of-course exams.

Superintendent Mike Grego, who announced Summer Bridge in February, targeted 12,000 students for the program. But he said he still was celebrating the smaller turn out because many of those students wouldn’t have been served otherwise.

The program is intended to curb summer learning losses, which tend to be greater among low-performing students.

Of the 2,197 students who enrolled, 1,581 were in elementary school and 616 were in middle school, according to the district.
