Two more athletic transfers are okayed
The Hillsborough County School Board said yes on Tuesday to two athletic transfers, both to play football at Durant High School and both who moved to Durant from private schools. In both cases, the parents said financial hardship was a factor.
That makes seven cases the board had heard since the new athletic policy went into effect. Unless a student meets one of four specific sets of criteria, he or she cannot play on a school athletic team within one year after transferring. A committee consisting of district staff and community members makes the call. This came in response to the Armwood High School athletic eligibility scandal last year.
The athletes can appeal those decisions to the School Board. So far the board has ruled yes in all but one case, in which the student and his family failed to show up to the hearing -- twice.
District officials are fine-tuning the policy with the help of board member Candy Olson.
