Two Pasco charter school expansion requests delayed

Two Pasco County charter schools -- Academy at the Farm and Imagine School at Land O'Lakes -- will have to wait at least two more weeks to find out if they'll be allowed to expand their enrollments.

Each had asked the School Board for permission to grow, Academy by 15 percent and Imagine by 20 percent, and initially superintendent Kurt Browning had signed off on the proposals.

On further reflection, though, Browning had some reservations. As he wrote to charter schools supervisor Nancy Scowcroft just a day before the board meeting, "Why are we recommending an increase in enrollment for Imagine Charter School when they are not recognized as a high performing charter school?"

He pulled the proposal from consideration on Tuesday, saying he wanted to have more information about the schools' performance on FCAT and other accountability measures before making his final recommendation. Taking extra time made particular sense, he said, given the district's position denying Athenian Academy charter school an expansion based on its academic performance.

"If we are going to be consistent with the way we treat charter schools, we need to pull these items," Browning explained.

More FCAT results are due later this week, with school grades expected in July.
