University of Tampa gets its own wave of creepy clown sightings
TAMPA — Perhaps it was inevitable.
The scourge of creepy clowns — very few of whom actually seem to exist in the flesh — afflicted another school earlier this week, this time the University of Tampa. A message from the Office of the Dean of Students on Oct. 4 sought to nip the issue in the bud.
"If you hear rumors of a clown hoax on campus please do not get involved in this fad," the email read. "Avoid dressing up as a clown or going out in groups in search of clowns."
On Monday, about an hour before midnight, UT Campus Safety dispatch started getting multiple reports of "an unknown subject or subjects dressed as clowns" throughout campus. Officers immediately went to check out each reported sighting, flooding the campus.
Officers talked to students at the supposed clown sighting spots. Students reported that clown rumors started in an online group chat before jumping to other social media platforms, such as Snapchat.
Not a single student claimed to have seen a clown themselves.
UT asked students to call Campus Safety at 813-257-7777 to report any sightings.
