USF professor is one of Popular Science's Brilliant 10
A University of South Florida associate professor of biological oceanography has been named one of Popular Science magazine's Brilliant 10 for 2013, USF has announced, putting her among the most groundbreaking young scientists, doctors and engineers in North America.
Mya Breitbart, 35, leads a lab at USF’s College of Marine Science. Her work involves identifying unknown viruses through analyzing DNA, a method that can be applied across many different samples, curtailing the time-consuming problem of having to run many individual tests to identify viruses. It also allows researchers to understand how viruses spread through the world and could be a game-changer, for example, in a virus outbreak scenario among people, or in finding out how an illness spreads over a crop of plants.
