Watergrass Elementary launches video welcome for new students
Major renovations to Quail Hollow Elementary School in Wesley Chapel have nearly 400 children transferring to one of two different schools in the fall.
Nearby Watergrass Elementary, one of two receiving schools, has taken to YouTube to welcome the students. The school's teachers are making videos introducing themselves and reading stories for the kids to listen to. The school's YouTube portal opens with a video with students talking about what they like best about Watergrass.
"Many kids have come to visit," said instructional technology coach Brandon Maldonado, who is spearheading the effort. "But they didn't get a chance to meet all of the teachers."
Principal Scott Mitchell has made clear that the Quail Hollow students and teachers who are moving over to Watergrass will be integrated into the campus, and not kept as a school within a school. The children will be mixed up in classes taught by teachers from both schools. Some of the Watergrass teachers gave up their classrooms and moved to portables to ensure that the Quail Hollow teachers had space within the buildings, too.
"It can be an intimidating experience," Maldonado said. "Anything we can do to ease the transition."
The video project will continue throughout the summer.
