What to do with Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day?
The annual Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day arrives Thursday, and once again it falls in the middle of Florida's FCAT testing cycle. With the stakes high, some principals have raised the question of how to handle parent requests to take their kids out of school.
The Pasco school district sought a middle ground, offering a suggested solution for principals to follow. (The top administration didn't want to mandate anything, to allow principals to retain the ultimate authority over what happens.) The communications office issued a memo recommending that schools allow the absences provided that the students have completed all their testing — it is a makeup day, after all — and that the parents submitted their request in advance.
To avoid school disruptions, the district also set May 2 as an alternate day for district employees to bring their own children to work with them.
What is your district doing to deal with the conflict? Should students miss school, or FCAT testing, to accompany their parents to work?
