Softball roundup: East Lake’s opener is a success on and off the field

East Lake started the season with its 10th annual Strike Out Cancer game to raise money for cancer research.

The game was quick. The Eagles, the defending Class 8A, District 10 champions, beat Pinellas Park 11-1 in five innings.

Tori Brennan threw a six-hitter and went 2-for-3, including a home run.

East Lake raised more than $500.

Academy at the Lakes 1, Wesley Chapel 0: Alexis Kilfoyl, the nation's top recruit in the 2019 class according to FloSoftball, threw a one-hit shutout in a matchup of playoff teams from last year.

Mitchell 13, Zephyrhills 2: Katie Bright and KayLee Barber each hit homers in the Mustangs' season opener. Bright,a freshman, is one of several talented newcomers in Pasco County. She also hit a homer in last week's preseason tournament.

Osceola 11, Admiral Farragut 4: Megan Weisenberg hit a homer in her first at-bat of the season to ignite the Warriors' offense. Osceola built a 7-0 lead by the sixth inning. All 20 players got in the game for the Warriors.

Tarpon Springs 5, Boca Ciega 4: The Spongers made a video to get ready for their season opener.

Tarpon Springs backed it up by winning a key Class 6A, District 9 game. The Spongers have won three straight in the series, the previous two coming in last season's district final and region semifinals.
