6A-7: Weeki Wachee dispatches Hernando in four
CRYSTAL RIVER – No. 3 Weeki Wachee upset county foe and second-seeded Hernando in four sets (25-18, 25-27, 25-10, 25-20) Tuesday night in the Class 6A, District 7 semifinal to advance to the championship match Thursday night.
After Hernando (16-7) evened the match at a set apiece, it seemed the Leopards had the momentum going into the third, but Weeki Wachee (18-8) built a 13-0 lead before the Leopards scored their first point on an Ali Bronson kill. Senior Miranda Werkmeister had five kills in the set to lead the Hornets. Seytia Hill and Albrionna Grayson Simon combined for five other kills. The Leopards also committed six service and return errors.
In a harder-fought fourth set, the Hornets were up 13-7 after a point scored off a tip by Miranda Werkmeister, but Hernando went on a 6-0 run to cut the lead to 13-12. Bronson had two kills during the run.
The Hornets’ Brooke Sereda scored on a kill to make it 17-13, but Hernando reeled off four straight points and tied it at 17 after Sereda was called in the net. Sereda and Taylor Miller scored four consecutive points to put Weeki Wachee back up 21-17, a lead the held onto for the eventual victory. Sereda had eight points in the set, and Miller had five, including a point of a block on match point. Josey Sims had a nice set with four points for Hernando.
In the first set, the Leopards committed 10 service and return errors, while the Hornets only had four, which contributed to the Hornets’ first-set victory.
Hernando won the second set behind Bronson’s eight points. Bronson also scored the final two points of the set capped by a point off a block. The Hornets had eight errors in the set.
“ The girls came out fighting, and they found their momentum, and they knew they had to keep moving and not stop,” Hornets coach Kelly Werkmeister said.
