Leon McQuay's dad defends son after USC football decommit

January

News from a California defensive end 2,500 miles away apparently has some Trojans upset with…Armwood S Leon McQuay III.

McQuay announced his verbal commitment to the Trojans during Friday’s Under Armour All-America Game at Tropicana Field. He plans to enroll early at USC , which lost 10 scholarships as a result of NCAA penalties stemming from the Reggie Bush scandal.

California four-star defensive end Kylie Fitts also planned to enroll early. And that’s where the problem lies, according to the Orange County Register:

Last week, the Trojans got a commitment from five-star safety Leon McQuay III, who is expected to enroll early and start classes next week. That bumped Fitts out of the spring-enrollment class, which is limited because of USC’s NCAA sanctions. USC asked Fitts to enroll in the summer, but Fitts de-committed.

Fitts wouldn’t go into details in an interview with 247Sports.com, but he hinted that it could be the case, although he is still considering the Trojans.

McQuay’s dad defended his son in a series of Tweets:

I will not let my son take the blame for fitts situation. My son worked as hard if not harder to enroll early. This is the part of sanctions

parties involved must understand. Thus why we waited and again who knew L3 would pick Usc I certainly didn't We as parents have to be involved

At least one fan on Twitter wasn’t happy about the move, saying the scholarship should have gone to Fitts because he was promised the spot first and that he “got screwed.”

But almost every other Tweet directed at McQuay’s father has been in support of the five-star Hawk .
