Oregon State Beavers use A PLANE to attract recruits

17

October

I’m all about crazy recruiting tactics for second-tier programs to get prospects’ interest. Here’s one I haven’t seen before, from Rivals.com.

Oregon State FLIES A PLANE over stadiums in California, with the words “Oregon State football” and “Go Beavs” lit up on the bottom.

“I was over there talking to (USC commit Chris Hawkins), and he said, ‘Man, USC isn't sending me a plane,’” Oregon State commit Jermel Walker told Rivals.

The Beavers are having a fine season in the Pac-12, but they’re still a clear No. 2 team in that state. And in California, they’re farther down the list, probably behind USC, Oregon and Stanford, to name three.

That’s why I love tricks like this. It gets a prospect to know you’re interested and to think about you, at least for a second. Maybe they do enough research after that to schedule a visit. Then you've got a chance.

I like it when Arizona sent a wanted poster for St. Petersburg Catholic RB Ryan Green.

Or when Missouri used larger envelopes than everyone else – so a Tiger logo would stand out in a stack of mail on the coffee table.

Or when Oklahoma State erected a billboard near a high school in Waco, Texas so future NFL defensive back Perrish Cox could see it every day.
