Should USF football consider hiring Plant coach Robert Weiner?

December

This is pure speculation. One hundred billion percent speculation.

With that out of the way, let’s talk about Plant coach Robert Weiner becoming the head coach at USF. I’m not the first to raise the question.

Here’s what Scout recruiting analyst Jamie Newberg tweeted over the weekend: “Do u think # USF AD gives any consideration to Tampa Plant head coach Robert Weiner?”

The topic also came up during our live chat last night.

No snide remarks about recruiting, please, but let’s discuss. Weiner would know the area. He’d have contacts with high school coaches, which would help him land some of Tampa Bay’s top prospects. You know, the ones Bulls fans say USF just hasn't been able to land. You don’t win four state titles in this state without having some football smarts, too.

Even if USF isn’t a top-tier job – and I think it’s a better gig than some of my colleagues do – it’s still a big jump from high school to college. It’s not unprecedented, though. Gus Malzahn went from head coach at Springdale High School in Arkansas to the Razorbacks’ offensive coordinator. Seven years later, he’s the head coach at Arkansas State, where he led his team to the Sun Belt title.

Bill Blankenship progressed from head coach at Oklahoma power Tulsa Union, to an assistant at the University of Tulsa, then to head coach. Seven years after his last high school state title, his Golden Hurricane is the champion of Conference USA.

Todd Graham (Arizona State) hopped from high school head coach to college assistant, and he’s hopped around as the head coach in major college programs, too.

And one of the hottest assistants in the country, Clemson’s Chad Morris, was a high school coach in Texas three years ago. His name has been rumored for a handful of head coaching positions this winter (and last).

But none of them jumped straight from high school coach to head coach of a college. Off the top of my head, I can think of only coach who did that recently. Todd Dodge jumped from national powerhouse Southlake Carroll (Texas) to North Texas – and was fired in 2010 after posting a 6-37 record.

If you’re USF, do you consider hiring Weiner? Why or why not?
