Football: Lakeland Christian 27, Berkeley Prep 26 (OT)
LAKELAND – Senior R. B. Marlow shot past the line to block the extra point attempt by Berkeley Prep and Lakeland Christian escaped with a 27-26 overtime win Thursday night before a near capacity crowd of 2,048 at Viking Stadium.
The win ensures the Vikings a playoff spot since Berkeley already has lost to Tampa Catholic, which will host LCS on Oct. 30.
Heroics are nothing new for the 5-foot-11 two-way player.
“Thanks to my teammates they afforded me the opportunity to have a free release to the kicker, since there were others shooting the gaps,” said Marlow, who has a team-high seven blocked kicks and a career-record 11 with the in Viking blue.
Tied at 20 after regulation, the teams went to overtime, starting at the 10-yard line. Lakeland Christian (8-0, 1-0) got the ball first, scored on a Lorenz Deshazor 1-yard run and Josue Blanco kicked the extra point.
The Buccaneers (4-3, 0-2) scored on a Gordon Stetson 3-yard run. Then came the Jeff Guttentag extra- point kick and Addison Grams’ hold was good, but Marlow seemed to come from nowhere.
“He’s so quick off the point,”said LCS coach Wayne Peace of Marlow. “This team just plays with a lot of heart. We just never gave up tomight and really, you can’t coach “heart.”
Kicker Blanco had tied the game with 10:20 left on a career-long 43-yard field goal. The senior had a chance at a 50-yard boot, which he has done in practice, with six seconds remaining in regulation, but it fell about 10 feet of the cross bar.
“We had our chances, but this is a tough team,” said Berkeley coach Dominick Ciao. “They made some big plays against us, however, but we competed every minute.”
