Girls basketball district preview

The regular season is over. All the practices, games and tournaments have been preparation for this time of year. It’s district tournament time, and some teams have been pointing to this week since school began.

“We’ve been doing preseason conditionings since the second day of school,” Lakewood coach Necole Tunsil said. “The seniors got together and decided that’s what they wanted to do. Now we’ll see if all those days in the weight room, on the track, at weekend practices and games have paid off.”

Lakewood (16-4) is a top seed in Class 6A, District 11 and has its sights set on a trip to Lakeland for the state semifinals. But the Spartans aren’t the only area team with hopes of a bus ride to Lakeland.

Seffner Christian (24-1) has only lost to Lakewood Ranch and has won 22 straight. The Crusaders went all the way to the Class 3A state semifinals last season before losing to Miami Country Day. That scenario could play out again, but this time it will be in Class 4A.

“When they’re dialed in and aggressive they all play well together,” Crusaders’ coach Joe Cooper said.

Palm Harbor University, which won the PCAC north championship Wednesday, could find itself in a rematch against Lakewood Ranch at the Class 8A region final. The Hurricanes lost 49-42 to the Mustangs last season. And they advanced to the regional final two years ago before suffering another loss.

“Are we just going to be the team that only gets to the elite eight or are we going to do better than that?” PHU coach Darian Dublin said. “I think we certainly can do it, but we have to finally do it.’’

That’s the intrigue of the postseason. Which area teams can do it? Tampa Catholic (23-2) has Alise Davis and her 17 points per game. The Crusaders ran into Brooks DeBartolo in last year’s Class 4A tournament. Now in Class 5A, they have the talent to play for a championship, if they can get past fellow Tampa team Academy of the Holy Names.

Plant, 23-1 prior to the season finale at Newsome, is another Class 8A team that will likely have to deal with PHU or Lakewood Ranch. The Panthers lost in the district semifinals last season and didn’t make it to regionals.

Then there is Carrollwood Day. The Patriots have never been to regional play, but that will almost certainly end this season. They are 23-2 despite being loaded with five freshmen starters.

“Nobody is going to remember what we did in the regular season, it’s meaningless,” Patriots’ coach Karim Nohra said. “We’re starting at 0-0. My job is to have them as prepared as possible for the postseason. And that’s something I’ve been working on since Day 1.”
