March

1. Newsome (14-0)

This week: No games scheduled.

Scoop: The Wolves, which moved up to No. 5 in the latest MaxPreps national 25 poll, won both games last week and are the area’s only undefeated team. The pitching has been dominant with Cassidy Davis (0.45) and Claire Feldman (0.86) both posting miniscule ERAs and combining for 117 strikeouts. Newsome has the week off during spring break before playing Plant City on March 22 in an anticipated matchup.

2. Plant City (12-1)

This week: Friday-Saturday at Sarasota’s  Spring Slam Tournament

Scoop: The Raiders have won nine straight, including a 3-2, 11-inning victory over Riverview that kept them on top of the Class 8A, District 6 standings. Edmilly Molina is hitting .489 with 23 RBIs and pitcher Ashley Blessin has 120 strikeouts, including a season-high 22 in last week’s win over the Sharks.

3. Chamberlain (14-1)

This week: No games this week.

Scoop: The Chiefs were upset by East Bay, dropping them from the unbeaten ranks. But Chamberlain proved that loss was more of an aberration, especially after winning four games this past weekend to take the Lady ’Canes Spring Tournament title. Included in that total were impressive victories over defending state semifinalist Sarasota and district rival Gaither.

4. Nature Coast (14-1)

This week: Friday-Saturday at Hernando’s Leopard Slam Tournament

Scoop: Last week’s 2-1 victory over Hudson was the first time the Sharks have allowed a run in their past five games. Abbey Primavera won both games last week, allowing a combined nine hits and two runs. She is 11-0 this season with a 0.69 ERA and 77 strikeouts.

5. Springstead (12-1)

This week: Friday-Saturday at Hernando’s Leopard Slam Tournament

Scoop: The Eagles extended their win streak to eight with victories over Crystal River and Weeki Wachee last week. The offense is averaging eight runs per game and scored a combined in last week’s wins. Paige Pfent (.523) and Abby Oliver (.500) are the top two hitters.

6. Land O’Lakes (13-2-1)

This week: Tuesday vs. Wiregrass Ranch; Thursday vs. Hudson; Friday-Saturday at Sarasota’s Spring Slam Tournament

Scoop: The Gators cruised last week, beating Class 6A, District foes Zephyrhills and River Ridge by a combined 27-1. The offense had its performance of the season, which was needed after scoring just two runs in splitting games with Pasco and Academy at the Lakes the week before. Tia Williams is hitting a team-high .420 with 19 RBIs.

7. Gaither (13-3)

This week: No games this week.

Scoop: The Cowboys made it to the final of the Lady ’Canes Spring Tournament, losing to Class 7A, District 8 rival Chamberlain for the second time this season. Gaither is averaging 10 runs per game, but has scored just one run in its three losses. Elizabeth Mason is batting .618 with 19 RBIs and 27 stolen bases.

8. Steinbrenner (10-3)

This week: Friday-Saturday at Sarasota’s Spring Slam Tournament

12. Sickles (9-4)

This week: Friday-Saturday at Sarasota’s Spring Slam Tournament

Scoop: The Gryphons clinched the No. 2 seed in Class 8A, District 5 by beating Plant 7-6 in nine innings to complete the season sweep. Leadoff hitter Morgan Noah continues to be the catalyst with a .444 average, 10 runs scored and five stolen bases.

13. Tampa Catholic (13-5-1)

The win was against defending 2A state semifinalist Canterbury.

14. River Ridge (9-4)

This week: Tuesday vs. Crystal River

Scoop: A 15-1 loss to Land O’Lakes dropped the Royal Knights to 7-3 in Class 6A, District 7 play. River Ridge was swept by the Gators in the regular season, which all but eliminates them from clinching the top seed. Allysa Lyons is the team’s top hitter with a .375 average and 18 RBIs.

15. Riverview (9-5)

This week: Friday-Saturday at Sarasota’s Spring Slam Tournament

Scoop: The Sharks lost three straight, including  pair of one-run defeats to Plant City and Plant. By losing to the Raiders, Riverview fell to second place in the Class 8A, District 6 standings. This week, the Sharks will try to bounce back at the Sarasota Spring Slam Tournament.

16. Plant (8-7)

This week: No games this week

Scoop: The Panthers went 2-2 at the Lady ’Canes Spring Tournament. After being shut out in losses to East Lake and Lake Brantley, the offense broke out of a month-long slump, scoring six runs each in wins against Countryside and Tampa Catholic to close out the tournament on a positive note.

17. Mitchell (12-3)

This week: Tuesday vs. Ridgewood; Thursday at Northeast

Scoop: The Mustangs extended their win streak to six with a 2-1 win over Dixie Hollins in their only game last week. Mitchell remains undefeated in Class 7A, District 10 and can clinch one of the top two seeds with a win against Northeast on Friday.

18. Alonso (9-4)

This week: Friday-Saturday at Sarasota’s Spring Slam Tournament

Scoop: It was a good week for the Ravens, who beat Middleton and Palm Harbor University by a combined 21-2. The win against the Hurricanes clinched the No. 2 seed in the Class 9A, District 8 tournament for Alonso. Jessica Louth leads the team with a .583 average.

20. East Bay (8-8)

This week: Friday-Saturday at Daytona Beach Tournament

Scoop: The Indians are on a five-game win streak, the biggest victory coming last week against previously undefeated Chamberlain. 21. Osceola (11-5)

This week: Tuesday at Sunlake; Thursday at Dixie Hollins; Friday vs. Clearwater

Scoop: The Warriors went 2-1 last week, beating St. Petersburg and Northeast and losing to powerhouse Bartow. This week: Tuesday vs. Palm Harbor University; Wednesday vs. Christian Academy of Knoxville

Scoop: After beating Plant in eight innings in the opening round of the Lady ’Canes Spring Tournament, the Eagles lost two straight, then had their final game of the tournament against Sarasota end in a tie. A big game looms Tuesday with a conference game against Palm Harbor University.
