HomeTeam Hot Shot nominations: May 7-13
Each week, our HomeTeam staffers nominate male and female Hot Shot athletes from each of the counties we cover. Then we turn the voting over to readers. These nominations span Saturday, May 7 through Friday, May 13. Read up on all of our nominees then vote until noon Monday. Note: These are the last Hot Shots for the school year.
Katie Barnett, track, Admiral Farragut: The versatile athlete battled through a stress fracture in her foot to win the triple jump (37 feet, 9.5 inches) at the Class A state meet. It was the first state title for the junior, who has had several top-three finishes in the event.
Morgan Brown, track, Calvary Christian: The pole vaulter came back from a season-ending ankle injury in 2015 to win her signature event with a height of 11 feet at the Class A state meet last weekend at IMG Academy.
Bailey Hertenstein, track, Riverview: The sophomore turned in the most memorable event of this year’s state meet. Near the final lap of the Class 4A 1,600 final, Hertenstein tripped and fell to the track. She then regained her feet, and went from eighth place to first, winning in 5:05.14.
Chloe Jones, track, Hillsborough: The senior shot putter didn’t defend her Class 3A title, but her runnerup throw of 42-6.50 was almost 2 feet farther than her winning toss a year ago and her distance was better than two other class champions last weekend.
Owen Clanahan, track, Bishop McLaughlin: The junior won his first state title in the 300 hurdles, finishing in 38.65 seconds at the Class A state meet.
Gavin Gillespie, baseball, Gaither: The senior pitcher led Gaither to a 5-3 victory against Melbourne, securing the Cowboys’ first final four berth since 2005. He gave up five hits in 6 â innings, and got out of a big bases-loaded, no-outs jam in the sixth.
Alex Gray, track, Admiral Farragut: The sprinter defended his title in the 100 meters (11.12 seconds), won the 200 (21.78) and was part of the third-place 4x100 relay (43.23) to help the Blue Jackets win the Class A team title.
Trevor Foley, track, Hernando: The distance runner stumbled on the fourth lap of the 1,600 meters, but regained his footing to win in a personal-record four minutes, 18.98 seconds at the Class 2A state meet.
Luke Peterson, track, Shorecrest: A day after winning the 800 meters, the senior took first in the 1,600 in 4:30.06. Peterson also ran the lead leg to help the 4x800 relay team to a Class A title in 8:20.11.
CJ Van Eyk, baseball, Steinbrenner: The junior threw his third shutout in the postseason after beating East Lake 3-0 in the Class 8A region final. He helped lead the Warriors to their first state tournament appearance by scattering four hits and striking out 13.
