HomeTeam Hot Shots: Nominations for April 2-8
Each week, our HomeTeam staffers nominate male and female Hot Shot athletes from each of the counties we cover. Then we turn the voting over to readers. These nominations span Saturday, April 2 through Friday, April 8. Read up on all of our nominees then vote until noon Monday.
Breana Blankenship, softball, River Ridge: The sophomore was a combined 4-for-6 with five RBIs and two home runs in wins over Mitchell and Tampa Catholic in the final week of the regular season.
Cassidy Davis, softball, Newsome: The FSU signee threw a two-hitter with 17 strikeouts and went 2-for-4 with two home runs to break out of hitting slump in a win over Chamberlain.
Olivia Elliott, softball, Cambridge Christian: The sixth-grader was a combined 4-for-8 with five RBIs and three runs scored in wins over Bradenton Christian and Shorecrest.
Robyn Hancock, tennis, Osceola: The Warriors’ No. 3 player won her singles match, then teamed with Emma Mitchell to keep their perfect record at No. 2 doubles intact in a win over Largo to lead Osceola to its first state berth in the sport.
Annalise Klopfer, tennis, Clearwater Central Catholic: The sophomore won both of her No. 1 singles matches in the Class A region semifinals and finals. She won both in straight sets.
Shannon Saile, softball, Land O’Lakes: The Florida International signee threw a five-inning, no-hitter with 14 strikeouts against Fivay. It was her second straight no-hitter in as many weeks. She also has not allowed a run in 17 straight innings.
Triston Allen, baseball, Pinellas Park: The senior pitched a complete game against Osceola in a 2-1 win. He had 10 strikeouts.
Chris Berglund, baseball, Bishop McLaughlin: Berglund threw a complete-game seven-hitter in a 5-1 win over Springstead. He threw 77 pitches and gave up just one walk. He also pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the sixth inning to preserve the lead.
Sebastian Castillo-Sanchez, tennis, Wiregrass Ranch: Castillo-Sanchez won at No. 1 singles in a region final victory against Lakeland, handing Isaac Nortey his first set and match loss of the year. Castillo-Sanchez also joined forces with Destiny Okungbowa for a doubles victory that sent the Bulls back to state.
Ryan Mejia, baseball, Alonso: The senior went 2-for-3 with four RBIs in Alonso’s 11-0 victory against Jefferson. Mejia is hitting .377 with 12 RBIs on the season.
Tyler Mondoux, baseball, Plant City: The Raiders’ starting pitcher struck out eight in five innings in a 3-1 victory against Spoto, giving up just one hit and no runs. The senior has a 3-0 record and a 2.03 ERA.
Aaron Swartz, tennis, East Lake: Swartz won both of his singles and doubles matches in the region semifinals and finals. He dominated in the region final against Land O’Lakes, winning his singles match 6-1, 6-1 and his doubles match 6-3, 6-0.
