HomeTeam Hot Shots: Nominations for April 30-May 6
Each week, our HomeTeam staffers nominate male and female Hot Shot athletes from each of the counties we cover. Then we turn the voting over to readers. These nominations span Saturday, April 30 through Friday, May 6. Read up on all of our nominees then vote until noon Monday.
Hannah Brookover, track, Calvary Christian: The senior capped off her distance running career by winning the 3,200 meters in 10:55.86 and finishing second in the 800 in 2:15.74 at the Class A state meet.
Victoria Cannata, track, Land O’Lakes: The senior, who is a multisport athlete, took second in the high jump with a leap of 5 feet, 6 inches at the Class 3A state meet.
Emily Gauvey, track, Mitchell: The senior high jumper cleared 5 feet, 6 inches to finish in a tie for second in her signature event at the Class 3A state meet.
Bailey Hertenstein, track, Riverview: The sophomore placed second (13.30 seconds) in the 800 meters at the Class 4A meet and third in the 3,200 in a personal-best 10:44.65.
Jessica Louth, softball, Alonso: The senior was 2-for-3 and had a walkoff two-run homer in an 8-6 win over Miami Palmetto in the Class 9A state semifinals. The Ravens advanced to their first state championship game.
Christa Ward, softball, Countryside: The sophomore third baseman had the winning hit and sealed the outcome with the final catch in a 2-0 victory over Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas in the Class 8A state semifinals.
Jack Anderson, baseball, Jesuit: The sophomore threw a complete-game one-hitter against Robinson in the Class 6A region semifinals. Anderson walked two batters and struck out six.
Brent Dawson, track, Pasco: The senior had one of the best high jumps of the day in Class 3A, clearing 6 feet, 4 inches. But he finished as the runnerup based on number of misses.
Christian James, baseball, East Lake: James did just about everything in the Eagles’ 4-0 win over Lakewood Ranch on Tuesday. He threw a three-hit shutout and had six strikeouts. He also had two hits and two RBIs.
Garrett Jerothe, track, River Ridge: The senior finished second in his final state meet, setting a personal record along the way. He cleared 14 feet, 6 inches as the Class 3A runnerup.
Luke Peterson, track, Shorecrest: The senior made his move on the final turn to win the 800-meters title in Class A in a time of 1:56.76.
CJ Van Eyk, baseball, Steinbrenner: The junior right-hander gave up just three hits in a complete-game shutout against Durant in the Class 8A region semifinals. Van Eyk has a 10-1 record and 0.91 ERA, striking out 77 in 110 innings.
